Highlights from the 35th edition

On March 6 and 7, students from 14 law schools across Canada competed in the 35th annual Davies Corporate/Securities Law Moot.

The event was organized by Jesany Michel, Jennifer Grossklaus, Deniz Palancioglu and Nyah Layne. The problem, written by Jonathan Bilyk and Michael Disney, explored a variety of issues, including the duty of confidentiality, the meaning of “material change” after the Lundin decision, the regulation of shareholder rights plans and the protection of minority security holders in special transactions.

The top two teams competed in a final round before a five-member panel comprising the Honorable Justice Malcolm Rowe of the Supreme Court of Canada, the Honourable Justice Elizabeth Walker of the Federal Court of Appeal, the Honourable Justice Benjamin Zarnett of the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Honourable Justice Jane Dietrich of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and Mr. Grant Vingoe, CEO of the Ontario Securities Commission.

Top Factum awards went to Peter A. Allard School of Law – University of British Columbia (First Place), Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law – University of Toronto (Second Place) and Schulich School of Law – Dalhousie University (Third Place).
