Largest collective First Nations investment in nuclear generation in Canada
Davies is acting for a syndicate of lenders including The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company, Sun Life Assurance Company and iA Financial Group in the Williams Treaties First Nations' $700-million investment in Ontario Power Generation's Darlington New Nuclear Project.
This investment marks Canada's largest collective First Nations investment in nuclear power generation, bringing together the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Anishinaabeg Nations of the Williams Treaties, including Alderville First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, Beausoleil First Nation, Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation and Chippewas of Rama First Nation.
The financing helps advance Canada's first grid-scale Small Modular Reactors (SMR) – the first such project in the G7 – and was backed by a loan guarantee from the Canadian Indigenous Loan Guarantee Corporation, with the Province of Ontario participating as a 50 percent guarantor through the Building Ontario Fund. Beyond this milestone, the deal creates a durable platform for future Indigenous participation in major infrastructure development across the Williams Treaties Territories.
The Davies team advising on the transaction includes Nicholas Williams, Anthony Spadaro, Stephen Dalby, Adam Cockburn and Ethan Birbrager (Project Finance); and Andrew Ellis (Tax).
