Article: Foreign Investment: A Recurring Nightmare for the
Canadian Government?

Download this publication February 28, 2011

When the Conservative party was first elected to head Canada’s federal government in 2005, it showed little interest in the question of regulating foreign investment in the Canadian economy. From that initial position, the Conservatives eventually migrated to the view that advocating lower barriers to foreign investment could bolster their future election chances by positioning them as the progrowth, pro-consumer party in the Canadian political spectrum. This article discusses how instead of providing a boost to their electoral prospects, foreign investment has turned into a political sand trap for the Conservatives.
