Bayer/Monsanto/BASF Wins Matter of the Year at 2019 GCR Awards

Davies was among the firms honoured with the “Matter of the Year” award for our work on the Bayer/Monsanto/BASF merger and related divestments at the 9th annual GCR Awards on March 26 in Washington, D.C.

Davies acted for Monsanto Company on competition and regulatory matters in the US$66-billion acquisition by Bayer AG. The merger, which combined two of the world's largest agricultural input suppliers, faced extensive regulatory reviews internationally and in Canada. To address concerns about the impact of the merger on competition in Canada, the Commissioner of Competition and Bayer AG entered into a consent agreement requiring Bayer to divest its canola seeds and traits business, as well as its soybean seeds and traits business, its carrot seeds business and a seed treatment business.

The team on this transaction included John Bodrug, Elisa Kearney and Alysha Manji-Knight.

Held annually, the GCR Awards celebrate the best in competition enforcement, merger and cartel defence from around the world.
