Colin also acts for private family enterprises in domestic and international trust matters. An experienced tax litigator as well as planner, Colin has appeared before trial and appellate courts on income tax matters and frequently represents taxpayers with the Canada Revenue Agency (formerly CCRA (Revenue Canada)) and provincial taxation authorities. In recent years, Colin has participated in the structuring and implementation of a number of income funds, including the $200 million initial public offering of Osprey Media Income Funds, the IPC US REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT TRUST, the first Canadian REIT to invest exclusively in U.S. commercial real estate, Retirement Residences REIT and the Sleep Country Canada Income Fund. In addition, Colin has participated in a number of public financing transactions and acquisitions, including for Osprey Media Group Inc. and Fortis Inc. and its subsidiaries.
Colin is the author of Administration of Income Tax (Carswell, 2004), is a contributing editor to the Canada Valuation Service and was a member of the Editorial Board of Ward's Tax Law and Planning (previously published by Carswell). He is also the author (with William Christian) of Parties, Leaders and Ideologies in Canada (McGraw-Hill Ryerson, 1995) and a predecessor work, Political Parties and Ideologies in Canada and has contributed articles and book reviews both in political science and law to various publications. Colin has been recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise in tax and trusts and estates.
From 1971-1976, Colin was a lecturer and then an assistant professor of political science at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, teaching primarily in the area of Canadian government and politics. Colin is also Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario, where he teaches the International Tax Law course.
Colin received a B.A. in 1966 and a Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Toronto, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1967 and an LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario in 1980. He became a partner in 1984.
