Geoff Turner is a partner in the taxation group. His practice concentrates on all aspects of domestic and international tax planning, mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations and corporate finance.
In recent years, Geoff has practised extensively in the international tax area, with a particular focus on foreign affiliate reorganizations and cross-border transactions. Geoff has had a major role in numerous transactions involving Barrick Gold Corporation, including as lead tax counsel in its US$10.4 billion takeover bid for Placer Dome Inc.
Geoff is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Western Ontario Law School where he has been teaching International Tax Law since 1999 and was awarded the UWO Students' Council teaching award of excellence in 2001 and 2007. In addition, Geoff has had several teaching assignments at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he lectured in International Tax Law from 2004 to 2005 and since 2005 has been teaching the tax component of the Advanced Mergers and Acquisitions Workshop. Geoff also was an instructor for the Tax Law section of the Ontario Bar Admission Course from 1995 through 2002.
Geoff is a frequent author on tax policy and cross-border tax issues. He is a contributing editor for the "International Tax" newsletter published by CCH, and is a member of the editorial board for the "Corporate Structures and Groups" journal published by Federated Press.
Geoff received his International Baccalaureate from Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific in 1985 and obtained his B.A. (Honours) from Queen's University (Gold Medallist in Economics) in 1988. In 1991 he received his LL.B. (Honours) from the University of Toronto and in 2005 he received his LL.M. (specialization in Tax) from Osgoode Hall Law School. Geoff commenced his articles with Davies in 1991, was called to the Ontario bar in 1993 and became a partner in 1995.
