Richard Cherney is a co-managing partner of the firm and a member of the firm's life sciences, corporate and commercial, corporate finance and securities law groups. Richard has a varied practice, representing private and public companies, including many operating in the life sciences field and in the retail industry. In particular, Richard has been a key advisor to many of Canada’s leading life science companies and regularly advises them at various key points in their development. As well, he represents a number of national investment dealers in connection with financings of many of Canada's multinational corporations.
Richard has also represented a Canadian bank in a number of key transactions, in particular, the acquisition of several Canadian affiliates of foreign banks. Richard also acted for Softimage Inc. in its acquisition by Microsoft Corporation and subsequently its sale by Microsoft to Avid Technologies.
In addition to his management responsibilities within the firm, Richard is actively involved in all aspects of the life sciences industry. He has represented Neurochem Inc., Adaltis Inc., MethylGene Inc. and Cryocath Technologies Inc. in connection with their initial public offerings, as well as Neurochem's cross-border NASDAQ offering. He has also represented a number of companies, including GeminX Biotechnologies Inc., in connection with their venture capital rounds. He has also negotiated a number of collaboration, license and research agreements with companies such as MGI Pharma, Lundbeck, Merck and others. He was a director of Neurochem Inc. and is an officer of MethylgGene Inc., Painceptor Pharma Corp. and GeminX Biotechnologies Inc.
Richard also represents a number of corporations involved in other businesses, and is a chairman of the board of directors of Le Château Inc., one of Canada's premier apparel retailers, and is a trustee of Benvest Newlook Income Fund, which operates the New Look chain of eyewear stores.
Richard is recognized as a repeatedly recommended corporate and commercial, corporate finance and securities, private equity, capital markets and mergers and acquisitions practitioner in the Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory. Richard is also recognized as one of Canada's leading counsel in Law Business Research’s International Who's Who of Capital Markets Lawyers. He has achieved one of Martindale Hubbell’s highest rankings.
Richard completed his B.A. at Concordia University in 1979 and his LL.B. at McGill University in 1984. He became a partner in 1993.
