Matthew Gottlieb is a partner in the litigation group. His practice includes commercial and corporate litigation, restructuring and insolvency law, libel law, securities litigation, administrative law and Internet and technology litigation. Matthew has been involved in a number of trials and court applications involving securities disputes, contractual disputes, insolvency issues, Internet and technology issues, professional negligence, governmental jurisdictional disputes, partnership disputes and product liability disputes. He has appeared as counsel before a wide variety of courts and administrative tribunals, including, among others, the Supreme Court of Canada, the Ontario Securities Commission, The Toronto Stock Exchange, the Metropolitan Licensing Commission and the Employment Standards Tribunal.
Matthew has recently acted as counsel for Hollinger Inc. in its Canadian litigation, BCE Inc. in litigation brought regarding its transactions with Teachers, Rogers in connection with libel actions commended by the former commission of the CFL and by a NHL player, a Canadian record company regarding copyright violation, a manufacturing company regarding an injunction obtained against its former President, Deutsche Bank in the insolvencies of Air Canada and Stelco, a Canadian television company in defence of a claim for breach of copyright, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in litigation regarding the establishment of a new Internet domain-name service, RSM Richter concerning its position as Court Officer in proceedings involving Dura Automotive, Aimtronics Corp. and Arpeco Engineering, a licensed trader with respect to charges laid by the Toronto Stock Exchange, an association regarding copyright liability for music transmitted over the Internet, and a businessman in connection with a shareholders dispute concerning a substantial Canadian security business.
Matthew entered the University of Western Ontario Law School after completing two years of undergraduate studies in the school’s Political Science department. He received his LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario in 1989 after completing two years at the University of Western Ontario Law School and his final year at the University of Toronto Law School. He has been a partner of the firm since 1993. Matthew is a guest instructor at the Intensive Trial Advocacy Course at Osgoode Hall Law School.
