Samuel Minzberg is a partner and a member of the firm’s Management Committee. He specializes in corporate, commercial, and tax law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, investment funds and business trusts. Sam is frequently consulted by leading Canadian corporations, both public and private, on domestic and international transactions and by global enterprises with Canadian operations and investments.
From January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2002, Sam was President and Chief Executive Officer of Claridge Inc. Claridge acts as a management and holding company on behalf of the Charles R. Bronfman Family. Until December 31, 1997 he was a partner at the Montréal predecessor firm to Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP. Prior to his five-year term at Claridge, Sam advised Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited, Canadian Reynolds Metals Company Limited and The Seagram Company Ltd., among others.
Sam is currently a Director of Reitmans (Canada) Limited, a leading Canadian retailer in women's fashion and accessories. He is a Director of HSBC Bank Canada, Canada's largest foreign-owned bank, and of HSBC North America Holdings Inc., the holding company for the HSBC Group’s businesses in North America. He is a Director of Quebecor Media Inc., a leading Canadian media corporation, as well as a Director and President of the Centre Board of the Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital. Sam is also a Director and Chairman Emeritus of the Sir Mortimer B. Davis - Jewish General Hospital Foundation.
Sam was listed as consistently recommended lawyer in the area of corporate tax by the Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory. He was also recognized as leading lawyer in private funds by The Best Lawyers in Canada. Sam has achieved Martindale-Hubbell’s highest ranking.
Sam received a B.A., B.C.L. and LL.B. from McGill University and was the recipient of the Elizabeth Torrance gold medal for highest standing in the civil law program. He has lectured on taxation at McGill University and on various issues at the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Fiscal Association and at numerous seminars. He is a past Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation and a former contributing editor of the World Tax Report published by the Financial Times of London.
