Matthew has also developed particular expertise in the field of class action defence, representing such clients as Aventis S.A., the Ontario Northlands Transportation Commission and Fujisawa Pharmaceuticals Co. Ltd. Most notably, Matthew assisted Rogers Communications Inc. in staying a proposed class action by a number of subscribers using an arbitration clause in subscriber end-user agreements, and represented Bayer Inc. before the Ontario Court of Appeal in a landmark case establishing the standard for certification of indirect purchaser class actions. Matthew is presently representing Delta Air Lines, Inc. in the first class proceeding under the new Federal Court Rules.
Matthew also acts for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation in a number of matters related to issues of problem gambling.
Matthew acted for Bell Canada in actions against Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. and Allstream Inc. arising out of the merger of those companies, which resulted in a public $75 million settlement in favour of Bell Canada.
Matthew received his A.B. (summa cum laude) from Princeton University in 1996 and his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1999. Before joining the firm, Matthew clerked with Justice Iacobucci at the Supreme Court of Canada in 1999/2000. He became a partner of the firm in 2003.
