Peter Mendell is a partner specializing in international commercial transactions – principally mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. He has benefited from his varied experience by leading major international mandates and assisting a large international clientele on five continents with particular emphasis in Europe, Asia and the Americas. As a consequence, Peter has acquired significant knowledge and experience in dealing with a wide diversity of cultures.
Among his larger multi-jurisdictional transactions are acquisitions by Australia-based Amcor Limited, from Schmalbach-Lubeca of Ratingen, Germany, of 58 subsidiaries located in 26 countries throughout the world, as well as from Rexam Plc of London, England of 10 plants in 7 countries, and the sale by Amcor to US-based Silgan Holdings Inc. of operations in 19 countries; and the establishment by Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. of a US$1.4 billion Singapore-based joint venture with Norwegian and Korean partners including the related acquisition of four newsprint manufacturing mills in Korea (2), Thailand (1) and China (1).
As part of his international practice, Peter has assisted many clients with their investments in China as well as a large number of Chinese companies seeking acquisitions and financing in Canada. Peter has participated in numerous conferences in Beijing and Shanghai, is co-chair of the firm's China Practice Group and travels extensively to China on a regular basis.
Peter has published numerous articles dealing with various aspects of multi-jurisdictional and international transactions and is a regular participant on panels dealing with these subjects.
Peter also represents many North American-based clients in their domestic transactions, such as the pending US$8 billion merger of Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and Bowater Inc., the establishment by Group CGI Inc. of a joint venture with Canada Post Corporation including the outsourcing by Canada Post of its IS/IT requirements having an aggregate value in excess of $3 billion, and the acquisition by U.S.-based Six Flags, Inc. of the La Ronde theme park in Montréal.
Peter’s significant experience with many retailers includes assisting them with their global licensing and franchising operations. He has advised Montréal-based The Aldo Group Inc. since its creation, and collaborates closely with it in connection with its licensing and franchising negotiations in over 30 countries around the world.
From 1991 to 2000, Peter was the Managing Partner of the firm’s Montréal office and Co-Managing Partner of the firm’s international offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Singapore.
