Richard Fridman
 
 
Richard Fridman is a partner practising in the areas of corporate finance, securities and mergers and acquisitions law.

Richard has a broad range of experience involving different types of business transactions, including sales and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, asset securitization, public financing and private placements.  Recently, he acted for PetroKazakhstan Inc. in connection with its acquisition by CNPC International Ltd. for US$4.18 billion.  He was also part of the team that represented Barrick Gold Corporation's in its successful US$10.2 billion acquisition of Placer Dome Inc. in January 2006 pursuant to an unsolicited take-over bid launched in October 2005.  Richard has represented privately held Canadian clients in connection with M&A activity in the United States and has been involved in a number of public offerings (representing both issuers and underwriters) and private placements.  He also advises Merrill Lynch Canada Finance Company on an on-going basis with respect to its $5 billion medium term note program.  Richard’s combined legal and previous management consulting experience has enabled him to act as counsel and to provide strategic and legal advice not only to management and directors of public corporations, but also to start-ups.

Richard completed his LL.B. and LL.L. at the University of Ottawa in 1997, where he was the gold medallist. In 1998, Richard clerked with the Honourable Mr. Justice Charles D. Gonthier of the Supreme Court of Canada.

In 1999, Richard completed an LL.M. at New York University in the field of U.S. Corporate Law. He was admitted to the Québec Bar in 1997, New York Bar in 2000 and the Ontario Bar in October of 2002. Before joining the firm, Richard worked as a management consultant at a leading international strategic consulting firm and carried out assignments in Canada, the United States and Europe.  Richard became a partner in 2005.
