Jim Doris is a partner in the Litigation, Competition & Foreign Investment Review, and Financial Restructuring & Insolvency practices. He specializes in general civil litigation with an emphasis on shareholder and oppression remedy actions, class actions, contested mergers and acquisitions and securities disputes, insolvency, and competition matters. Jim is a member of the firm's Management Committee.
Jim has appeared as counsel before a variety of courts and administrative tribunals in Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and Court of Appeal, the Quebec Superior Court and Court of Appeal, the British Columbia Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada, the Competition Tribunal, the Ontario Securities Commission and The Toronto Stock Exchange.
Representative Work
- Represented BCE Inc. successfully in plan of arrangement and oppression proceedings in connection with BCE's privatization transaction.
- Represented Pacifica Papers in one of the leading contested plan of arrangement and oppression remedy cases.
- Represented Canada Pipe Company in an abuse of dominance proceeding before the Competition Tribunal and Federal Court of Appeal.
- Acted for MI Developments Inc. in an oppression application commenced by one of its largest shareholders.
- Represents Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation in a class action brought on behalf of problem gamblers against OLG.
- Acted for the Ontario Securities Commission in the Ainsley Financial case, a leading administrative law decision, which considered the Commission's jurisdiction to issue policy statements.
- Acted in a number of large insolvency and restructuring matters, including Olympia & York, Cadillac Fairview, Confederation Treasury Services Limited, White Rose Crafts and Nursery Sales Limited and Phillip Services Limited.
