Alain Gaul is a partner specializing in the areas of financial restructuring, bankruptcy, insolvency, commercial litigation and environmental law.

As co-coordinator of the firm’s Financial Restructuring and Insolvency practice group, and as a member of its Litigation practice group, Alain has represented both creditors and debtors alike, as well as court officers involved in the restructuring process. He has also represented various financial institutions.

More recently, from April 2003 to November 2005, Alain was Chief of Staff for Québec’s Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Parks. In this capacity, he acquired in-depth knowledge of the environmental sector and the major issues facing that sector and its principal stakeholders. He rejoined the firm in December 2005. He has consistently played an active role on the Student and Trainee Lawyer Recruitment Committee.

Since his return in 2005, Alain has successfully represented numerous acquirers of businesses in an insolvency context. By way of example, he advised Lilianne Lingerie Inc. and La Vie en Rose Inc. in their acquisitions of the Moments Intimes and Victoire Delage boutiques. He also represented Zygo Corporation inc. (a publicly traded US corporation) in its acquisition of the assets of Solvision Inc.

Alain was awarded the Dean’s Prize from the Faculty of Law of the University of Sherbrooke for the highest overall average in his three years of university studies. He also was the recipient of the Barreau de St-François Prize for the best oral argument in the moot court competition.

Alain holds a Bachelor of Administration (B.Adm.) degree (with a minor in industrial relations) from the Université du Québec in Hull and a law degree from the Université de Sherbrooke, which he received in 1997. He became a partner with the firm in 2002.
