Elisa K. Kearney
 
 

Elisa Kearney is a partner in the firm's competition and foreign investment review group, advising clients on Canadian competition law and a range of business matters including mergers, misleading advertising, money laundering, privacy and lobbyist legislation, as well as criminal conspiracy investigations.

Elisa has advised clients in a wide variety of industries, including natural resources, media, airlines, consumer products and financial services.  For example, Elisa is providing competition law advice to Reuters Group PLC with respect to its combination with Thomson Corporation.  Elisa has played a key role in obtaining the requisite Competition Act and Investment Canada Act clearance for a number of recent transactions including, Barrick Gold Corporation's take-over of Placer Dome Inc. and acquisition of NovaGold Resources Inc.; Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund's acquisition of Famous Players and GE Commercial Finance's acquisition of Bombardier Capital's Inventory Finance Division.

Elisa has co-authored articles for Competition Law Insight, FTC Watch and North American Corporate Lawyer and is actively involved in the Canadian Bar Association, Competition Law Section and American Bar Association Sections of International Law and Antitrust Law.  Elisa is also a director of the International Law Association, Canadian Branch.

Elisa received a B.A. (Honours) in History and Political Science from McGill University in 2000 and an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2003. Elisa joined the firm as a summer student in 2001 and spent a summer in each of the firm's New York and Toronto offices. Elisa articled with the firm and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2004.  She became a partner in 2007.

Prior to joining the firm, Elisa was an intern at the United Nations, Department of Legal Affairs, in New York where she worked extensively on treaty-related matters and completed a WTO workshop on trade negotiation. Elisa also interned at the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C.
