Franchising

Our significant franchising expertise is due in large part to the international expansion activities of many of our retail clients.  Franchising requires a detailed knowledge of various areas of the law, including licensing, intellectual property and international commercial transactions.  As leaders in each of these fields, we have been very successful advising our clients as they market their brands and expertise both at home and abroad.  In addition, our international tax expertise has been of fundamental importance in assisting our clients to structure their international franchising programs in the most tax effective manner.

We have dealt with the registration of trademarks in more than 70 countries all over the world.  We have negotiated and concluded franchise agreements in a wide range of countries, including Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Israel, Kuwait, New Zealand, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sweden, U.S.A. and United Arab Emirates.  As part of the foregoing process, we have formed close working relationships with local counsel throughout the world and through them have acquired significant knowledge and expertise regarding issues of local concern which are of interest to our clients as they pursue their objective of protecting their brand and franchising their unique expertise both in Canada and abroad.
