Members of our litigation practice group have significant expertise in libel and defamation law, acting for both plaintiffs and defendants. We have represented individuals and companies with complaints of defamation in many different situations, including cases concerning defamation on the Internet and in other electronic media. We have also acted in proceedings concerning false disparaging statements concerning products and services, in violation of common law, civil law and the
Trade Marks Act. We act in such matters before both superior and federal courts. Currently, members of our group are involved in:
- $100 million libel action commenced by Barrick Gold Corporation in respect of defamatory statements published by the defendants on the Internet;
- $3.5 million action commenced against Rogers Sportsnet and a reporter for defamatory statements allegedly made in sports broadcasts.
